Learn to Play Pickleball

Pickleball Basics

Pickleball is a fun paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It's played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, using paddles and a plastic ball with holes.

Court Dimensions

The court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long for both singles and doubles play. The net is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches in the middle.

Equipment

Players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials and a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball.

Scoring

Games are typically played to 11 points, win by 2. Only the serving team can score points.

The Two-Bounce Rule

After the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce before returning, and then the serving team must let it bounce before returning.

Beginner Tips

  • Start with a ready position - knees slightly bent, paddle in front of you
  • Focus on getting your serves in rather than hitting them hard
  • Learn to dink (soft shots that land in the non-volley zone)
  • Communicate with your partner about who will take shots in the middle
